How it works2

Sit. Check in. Let the map read itself.

  1. Sit

Sit with the method for your stage. A bell and one short spoken line keep the time, so your eyes can stay closed.

  2. Check in

Afterwards, answer a few plain questions about what actually happened. Did attention leave? Did sleep come? What was in front?

  3. The map reads itself

Over days, your sits place you on the ten stages. One unusual sit never moves you, in either direction.

The sit3

Eyes closed, bell on cue.

A guided meditation timer that stays out of the way.

  • Three movements. A preparation, the main sit and a closing, timed to the length you choose, from 5 to 60 minutes.
  • Soft bells, few words. One spoken line at each change, then quiet.
  • A sound to sit in. Rain, a stream, the ocean or a hearth, low under the sit.
  • Tap when you notice. Anywhere on the screen. Each notice is the practice.
  • Locked phone, still on time. The bells ring with the screen off.

The check-in4

Say what happened.

Then see what led the sit, and what to try next.

  • Plain questions. About what actually happened, not how good it felt. The questions follow your stage.
  • Every sit, named. Forgetting, mind-wandering, dullness or distraction, with one line on what the next sit should do.
  • Bring one sentence. Write what you will carry into the next sit. It waits for you on Today.
  • No scores. Nothing to win. A hard sit is information, not a failure.

The path5

Know your stage.

Read from many sits. One unusual sit never moves you.

Your working stage is the earliest stage whose obstacle still leads a real share of your recent sits. From Stage 5, Noticed asks you to check its reading with a teacher, because those signs are hard to judge in yourself.

  1. 1

    Show up

Show up, on a schedule you can keep.

  2. 2

    Notice the leaving

Shorten mind-wandering by enjoying the moment you notice it.

  3. 3

    Catch the breath

    Overcome forgetting and dozing off.

  4. 4

    Keep it in front

Keep the breath primary, and stay awake.

  5. 5

    Brighten the sit

Catch the dullness that feels like a good sit.

  6. 6

    Quiet the background

    Let subtle distractions fade.

  7. 7

    Ease the effort

Find stability that does not depend on pushing.

  8. 8

    Let the senses settle

Let a quieter body and meditative joy arrive on their own.

  9. 9

    Let joy soften

    Let joy mature into tranquility.

  10. 10

    Carry it with you

Let those qualities last after you get up.

Your sits6

Weeks of sits, kept.

Every sit on a calendar, and what led each week.

  • A calendar of practice. Each day you sat, marked in ink.
  • Strata. A column per week, showing which obstacles led, with the first ones at the bottom.
  • Reviews. A mindful review of the day, a weekly review, and a four-week note you can share with a teacher.
The Your sits screen in Noticed: a month calendar with each day sat marked, a summary line, and weekly strata of which obstacles led.
Learn7

Read what fits today.

The book stays the teacher.

  • Short lessons for your stage, each a minute long, each pointing to the matching section of the book.
  • Take it to the cushion. Every lesson ends with one thing to try in the next sit.
  • Your own copy. Add the PDF of the book you own and Noticed opens the right section. It never leaves your phone.

Colophon8

Kept on your phone.

What you notice on the cushion is yours. Noticed is built so it stays that way.

What is Noticed?

Noticed is a meditation journal and bell timer for the ten-stage path described in The Mind Illuminated. You sit with a guided timer, answer a few plain questions about what happened, and the app reads which stage your practice is working on from many sits.

Is Noticed affiliated with The Mind Illuminated?

No. Noticed is an independent companion app. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the authors or publishers of The Mind Illuminated, and it contains no text from the book.

Do I need the book?

No, but Noticed is made to be used alongside it. Each stage and lesson names the matching section of the book. If you own the book as a PDF, you can add it and the app opens the matching section. The file stays on your phone.

How does Noticed decide which stage I am on?

From your check-ins. Each check-in names what led the sit, such as forgetting, mind-wandering, dullness or distraction. Your working stage is the earliest stage whose obstacle still leads at least a quarter of your last ten sits, and at least two of them, so one unusual sit never moves you. From Stage 5 on, the app suggests checking the reading with a teacher.

Does Noticed collect my data?

No. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics and no advertising, and the app makes no network requests of its own. Your sits stay on your phone. A backup is a file you make and keep yourself. Privacy policy.

What does the meditation timer do?

A sit has a preparation, the main sit and a closing. Soft bells and one short spoken line mark each change, so your eyes can stay closed. You choose the length, from 5 to 60 minutes, and an optional background sound. You can tap anywhere to mark each moment you notice the mind has wandered.

How do I move my sits to a new phone?

On the old phone, open Settings and choose Back up your sits, then save the file. On the new phone, choose Restore from a backup and pick that file.

Is Noticed medical or mental-health care?

No. Noticed supports meditation practice. It is not medical or mental-health care. If practice ever feels destabilising, slow down and talk with a person who can be with you. If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or find a helpline.
